ICANN Approves .XXX

Apr 22, 2011

Its been over 10 years since the debate of having .XXX as a top level domain (TLD) started and finally, ICANN has approved the ICM Registry’s application to operate .XXX as a TLD. This decision was taken at the 40th ICANN Meeting at San Francisco earlier this year.

This single agenda has definitely generated the highest volumes of community comments than nearly any other issue ever faced within ICANN in the past.

The ICM Registry has been handed over the responsibility of operating the .XXX TLD provided there are improved and new benefits to the TLD.

All said and done, not everyone in the Adult industry has welcomed the .XXX TLD wholeheartedly. The Free Speech Coalition, a group sponsored by the Adult Entertainment Trade Association is against .XXX and the Registry’s rulings.

The Sunrise periods (3) will be starting over the coming months.

Do you see .xxx as the next “big thing” in the domain market?

  • Interesting. At least pornographic sites will now be classified into .xxx. It does seem an appealing prospect for many such sites to have a TLD as .xxx Whether it could be the next big thing is something we’ll just have to see. :P

  • Yes, although I don’t think they’re going to let go of their existing (and popular) .com sites anytime soon

  • Yes, because which will be the price?

    Regards.

  • Sergi, we’re still figuring out if .xxx will be a value add to our product portfolio, so the pricing is still not decided

  • This is a great idea, now we can easily categorize these kind of website easily. It obviously will be a great help to all the parent filter applications to filter kind of sites efficiently.

  • @Techie Salsan (sorry for the delay, for some reason the anti-spam plugin on our blog (akismet) marked your comment as spam)

Yes, that is one of the added advantages of this TLD. In fact, India has already banned this domain extension – http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/xxx-domains-to-be-banned-in-india-938639

We’ll have to wait and see if the adult industry opts for .xxx (with the threat of being blocked by many more countries) or if it sticks to the proven .com path

  • Banning of this .xxx domain extension in its beginning stage itself may lead the webmasters to stop using it.

  • Well, that is a possibility Salsan. But if the entire industry gets behind it, don’t think these small bans (geographic and ISP level) will affect the TLD in the long run
