The Internet Is Your Business: ICANN Seeks Volunteers

ICANN’s Nominating Committee seeks applications for six leadership positions

MARINA DEL REY, Calif.: The Nominating Committee for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is looking for volunteers to help it with the global task of coordinating the Internet’s unique identifiers.

“The Internet is the most powerful communications tool in human history — and the incredible story is how much of this has been accomplished by dedicated volunteers,” said Hagen Hultzsch, Chair of the Nominating Committee (NomCom). “ICANN’s work coordinating the Internet’s addressing system is at the foundation of the Internet and its future — and we are always looking for people who want to make a contribution.”

Historical First Batch of .Asia Auctions Completed with Success

Hong Kong, 25 January 2008 – DotAsia Organization is pleased to announce today the historical smooth completion of the first batch of domain auctions for the .Asia “Sunrise” (i.e. priority registration period intended for intellectual property rights owners).

The auctions proved to be a massive success in contrast to previous chaotic rushes for domain names that leave brand owners frustrated. The average winning price for the first batch of contended auctions netted over US$1500.00 per domain, with high bids for domain names reaching beyond a few ten-thousand dollars, signifying great interest from companies to invest into the new .Asia cyberspace. A total of over 600 domain names received more than one application during the first phase of Sunrise (Sunrise 2a) which totaled around 15,000 applications.

ICANN RDE Program Implementation

As you might already be aware, starting June 1st 2008, you will be required to deposit all your domain data keeping in line with ICANN’s RDE Program. As part of our Services, we will be incorporating an automated mechanism to allow for these deposits to be made as per the schedule defined by ICANN for your Registrar.

We have already begun the integration process from our side and need certain feedback from all Registrars on board our Platform, so that specific requirements may be incorporated to ensure complete compliance with ICANN’s policy.

  • We need to know if you are a Registrar for any of the TLDs that we do not support e.g. .aero, .asia, .cat, .jobs, .museum. .pro, .tel, .travel etc. and if these are being provisioned by you either directly at the Registry or through another system

  • For the TLDs that we support i.e. .com, .net, .info, .org, .biz, .name, .coop, .mobi, we need to know if you are provisioning these domains through any system other than ours

Since this is a very time sensitive project, we would need your earliest response to the questions here. As per the slated guidelines, we intend to make a consolidated domain data deposit to the Escrow Agent per Registrar. We thus need to be aware of whether you handle any domain registrations outside the LogicBoxes System, thereby allowing us to accommodate for such an arrangement and work out a feasible option for you.

We would appreciate your immediate response to this email. Please contact your LogicBoxes Account Manager to discuss this further or write in to [email protected].

ICANN issues plea for liberty from US government

ICANN has asked the US government to be freed from official control according to a report prepared by ICANN and sent to the Department of Commerce. The report addresses the objectives set by the US government that had to before it could become independent. These included that ICANN “has put in place means of being accountable to parties with an interest in the internet, including other governments, and that the process should now be completed” according to The Times.

Paul Twomey comments in the report to the Department of Commerce: “Has the process of the MoU and JPA towards building a stable, strong organization which can do this transition, has that been successful? … The board is effectively saying yes.” While Peter Dengate Thrush’s letter sent with the report says: “The Board proposes that the JPA is no longer necessary and can be concluded.”

The Times also quotes Dr Milton Mueller, a partner in the Internet Governance Project, a group of academics specialising in internet governance issues, who said: “Compared with other international organisations ICANN is very transparent, but at times it still feels a bit more like a private club, with not enough checks and balances. This new ‘no confidence vote’ procedure is definitely the direction they need to move in.”
